Rogue Brick Builders
Ryan McBryde, Co-Owner
How would you encourage younger or less experienced LEGO builders who admire your work?
I just want people to build what they’re passionate about. If they want it to look a certain way, look at your source material more than you look at your own work. If you can’t figure out how to build something, look at what techniques other builders use. Build with others as much as you can, it’s more fun. Display your builds online or at conventions; somebody will have a better day because of it.

When and how did you get started building with LEGO?
I first started building with Lego when I was around four. I built with my older brother’s bricks until I got my first set. From then, I played and built with Lego until I was 12, when I discovered the online Lego community. After this, I started to improve my building techniques and slowly got to where I am today.

I’ve always loved this ship design and had been drawing it during meetings when I should have been paying attention for a few years before I started. The ship is from the Halo video game universe, which I’ve always loved. I printed out a few images from the web and just started building. The name is from Avatar the Last Airbender. My dogs are named Sokka and Toph as well. We’ve always loved that show and I’m glad its getting a boost lately.

Having LEGO passed down by our older cousin, it's always been a large part of my life but it wasn't until the last few years of working at the Rogue Brick that I really discovered the value of the community and the intricacies of the art. My favorite part about LEGO is that it's an amazing creative outlet, and I love helping people explore how to express themselves in brick.

When and how did you get started building with LEGO?
I first started building in 2019 when I was helping my then 10-year-old granddaughter build the Alamo for a school project. COVID came the next year. And, between that and my retirement, it gave me the time to sit down and spend more time building.

What inspires you to build?
I get most of my inspiration from Lord of the Rings and by looking at pictures of real-life castles. From the rockwork to the unique shape of the towers and roofs, I’m really inspired by how diverse castles can be around the world.
I also draw a lot of inspiration from prompts for contests. I think of them not only a fun way to interact with the community, but also to push you out of your LEGO comfort zone.
